How to turn your team into a well-oiled machine?
3 tips to strengthen the sense of togetherness in your team
Is collaboration in your team sometimes a bit rough? Do you notice colleagues working past each other or underlying tensions simmering? Would you like to create more of a “we-feeling” without falling into cheesy teambuilding?
Team cohesion—or belongingness—on the work floor goes far beyond friendly coffee chats or being best friends. Belongingness can take several forms:
-
Social-oriented
When colleagues get along well and show genuine interest in each other’s work and well-being.
-
Goal-oriented
When team members work together on concrete results, exchange ideas, and come up with solutions.
-
Values-oriented
When collaboration is based on shared values and beliefs, fostering honesty and transparency.
-
Organization-oriented
When employees feel connected to the bigger picture and take pride in contributing to the organization’s mission.
Belongingness is about experiencing a warm, authentic bond where team members feel emotionally supported and jointly give direction to shared goals and values.
This doesn’t mean that everyone always has to agree or do everything together. On the contrary: differences in ideas stimulate innovation and vitality, as long as there is a solid foundation of respect and trust.
But how can you, as a leader, concretely build such a foundation? Here are 3 practical tips you can start using today.
TIP 1: Tune in to your team
A team in which everyone feels seen and heard functions more smoothly. This requires you, as a leader, to pay close attention to the emotional well-being of your people. Plan regular moments to check in on how they are doing—both individually and as a group. Notice not only words, but also non-verbal cues: who is sitting quietly in the corner, who looks tired? By listening actively and offering a sounding board during challenging times, you build trust and create a sense of safety within your team.
TIP 2: Create a shared “team compass”
Strong teams don’t navigate blindly. They know what they want to achieve (team goals), what they value (team values), and how they want to work together (team principles). For example, organize a pyramid discussion with the entire team to identify 4 to 5 core values. Then translate those values into concrete agreements: what does “respect” mean for us? How do we address each other when it’s lacking?
This shared compass provides a solid reference for daily decisions and helps prevent misunderstandings.
TIP 3: Celebrate successes and normalize mistakes
Connection doesn’t grow only during team days or formal meetings. Everyday interactions matter just as much. Pause to recognize milestones, no matter how small. Celebrate them together, even if it’s just with a simple compliment or a quick check-in at the start of the week.
On the other hand, share failures as well. Make it clear that mistakes are not taboo but an opportunity to learn and adjust together. This way, you build a culture of openness and trust — the perfect foundation for lasting team belongingness.
