The three psychological basic needs for autonomy, relatedness (belongingness), and competence form the essential ingredients for motivation and well-being at work. Autonomy refers to the degree of psychological freedom employees experience to shape their work in their own way and make choices. Belongingness is about feeling connected to colleagues and the organization. Competence refers to being able to achieve goals, feeling capable of successfully completing tasks or assignments, and continuing to develop oneself.
Employees whose ABC-needs are met feel more energetic, come to work with greater conviction and enjoyment, take initiative more readily, and are more productive. When these ABC-needs are frustrated, however, this leads to less job satisfaction, more physical complaints, and a higher risk of burnout.
