Transgressive behavior refers to all forms of undesirable behavior in the workplace that undermine the physical or psychological integrity of employees. This can range from offensive remarks and (verbal) aggression to sexual harassment, bullying, or even physical violence.
Gaining insight into the occurrence, frequency, and source of transgressive behavior is essential because of its impact on employees’ well-being, motivation, and engagement. It provides objective data and concrete tools to take preventive measures and to intervene appropriately. In this way, the organization builds a working environment in which respect and safety are self-evident.
We map the following forms of transgressive behavior:
- sexual harassment: sexually transgressive behavior and remarks with a sexual undertone
- verbal aggression: offensive remarks or gestures, hurtful language, or swearing
- physical aggression: all forms of physical violence or threats thereof
- bullying: repeated negative behavior aimed at belittling, isolating, or harming someone, in person or online
- discrimination: unequal treatment or exclusion based on characteristics such as gender, age, origin, religion, sexual orientation, or disability
