Disconnection refers to the ability of employees to detach from work-related stimuli and thoughts outside of working hours.
It involves digital disconnection (not being constantly available through email, smartphone, or laptop), emotional disconnection (letting go of events that happened at work in the past), and psychological disconnection (not continuously worrying about upcoming work-related tasks or challenges).
A healthy degree of disconnection contributes to recovery, well-being, and sustainable employability. A lack of disconnection, on the other hand, increases the risk of stress, overload, and reduced motivation.
